Edermine Rowing Club was first founded in 1973 by a group of locals who had an interest in Slaney Cot rowing, the wooden cot being the traditional fishing boat specific to the Wexford area. Members competed at regattas in Wexford Harbour, Ferrycarrig, Killurin and Edermine up to approximately 1986 at which time the club took a break from rowing activities. Thanks to the interest and enthusiasm of three of its former members, 1999 saw the club reform under the new name of Edermine Ferry Rowing Club and the rest is still history in the making with the club now in its twentieth year since reforming.
The club is affiliated to Rowing Ireland under Coastal Rowing and we are also affiliated to the Slaney Rowing Association which facilitates the organisation and running of the Annual Slaney Cot regattas hosted by each of its member clubs throughout the rowing season.
Club training generally starts around mid to late April and the club encourages and welcomes both Junior (age 10-18) and Adults (18+ with no upper age limit!) to come along and try out this fantastic sport whether interested in competitive rowing or as a leisure activity. Our ethos has always been to promote and make rowing accessible to people of all abilities and we find that adults often become involved when they accompany their children to the river and are encouraged to participate in rowing themselves. Life-jackets are compulsory for all participants and are provided by the club at training. With membership numbers averaging around 80 per annum, the club’s four boats are fully utilised during the training and competitive season.
Along with competing in the traditional Slaney Cot, we also compete in the coastal one-design yawl (fibre-glass boat) at the Irish Coastal Rowing Championships as this is the universal boat used by all clubs in the open class races. Throughout the years the club have achieved great success at local regattas and events and also have 11 sets of Championship medals to their name from both the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships hosted by the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation & more recently at the Irish Coastal Rowing Championships hosted by Rowing Ireland Coastal Rowing. The club also has a strong history of participating in long distance challenge rows in Ireland and London and have had notable successes in these events also.
